Background checks begin with the ATF 4473 form. Once completed, and verified against a government issued identification, the information is transmitted to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations (CBI). The 4473 form takes a short time to complete, but the CBI background check can take several days to complete. Colorado law requires an approved background check prior to any firearm transfer.

Current, non-expired government issued identification containing:
- Photo
- Full legal name
- Current Address. If your identification card does not contain your current address, another government issued document containing your full legal name and address must be provided. Vehicle registration tends to be the easiest document to find.
- Date of birth
- Identification number
- Expiration date (not expired)

CBI is currently only accepting background checks between the hours of 9am and 9pm.
